Phallic Construction 2002: Current Concepts and Future Directions

Phallic construction is one of the most challenging procedures in reconstructive surgery.  At our center we use a multi-disciplinary approach which includes urologists, plastic surgeons, gynecologists, endocrinologists and other experts. The purpose of this review is to discuss the history of phallic construction that has led to current techniques of phalloplasty. These will be briefly outlined in order to address some of the most recent indications for phallic construction, which include the procedure’s use in trauma patients, in patients with congenital anomalies, and in transgender patients.  Discussed are our results in each patient subcategory.
